LAke Anna HIstory....

In 1968 Lake Anna was just an idea. Virginia Power purchased 18,643 acres of rural land in 3 central Virginia counties along the North Anna and Pamunkey rivers, intent on providing water for a power plant.

Lake Anna was born 4 years later 1972!

Lake Anna is the second largest lake located entirely in the state of Virginia. Stretching for 17 miles in length and with a shoreline of over 200 miles, Lake Anna has become a recreational focal point.

The Lake is 2 Lakes in one. The "main lake" is composed of 9,600 acres and the "private side" is 3,400 acres. 3 rock dikes separate these 2 lakes. The water intake to the power plant is located on the "main lake" side and the warm water discharge empties into a series of 3 cooling ponds that make up the "private side" or warm side. After the water cools it returns to the main lake at dike 3.

The "private side" is private in the sense that there are no public boat launch facilities, no commercial properties like marinas etc. you only have access to this side if you own or rent. The water is about 7 to 8 degrees warmer than the main side.

The lake contains over 30 species of fish including catfish, walleye, striped bass, largemouth bass, white perch, yellow perch, bluegill, crappie and threadfin shad for that fisherman in your family.

Lake Anna is getting more popular every year for pleasure boaters and water skiers.

Boating typically peaks in June and carries on thru October. Fall is a favorite for the lake cruises as a time to see the spectacular fall colors.
